The Luce Scholars Program

July 2, 2009

The Henry Luce Foundation has worked to foster innovation, leadership, and international understanding in academic, policy, religious, and art communities since 1936. Although the foundation offers various different grants, only the Luce Scholars Program is offered directly to individuals. It is intended to encourage an awareness of Asia among potential American leaders who might not otherwise have any contact with Asian culture. Each year, eighteen applicants are given stipends and internships to live and work in Asia.

Luce Scholars “should have a record of high achievement, outstanding leadership ability, and a clearly defined career interest with evidence of potential for professional accomplishment.” They may come from virtually any field of study except Asian studies.

  • Eligibility: Applicants must be nominated by one of 67 universities. They must be American citizens who have at least a bachelor’s degree, in good health, and no older than 29 on September 1 of the year that they enter the program. Candidates must have no significant experience in Asia or Asian studies.
  • Deadline: Applicants must be nominated by an eligible institution in early December. Application Forms.
